About Us
History
Merrymac Farm Sanctuary founder and Director, Era MacDonald, has always been involved in rescue. Starting from a very young age, there were always critters coming home, hidden under her shirt, being snuck into her childhood house, in her home state of Kentucky. Her love for horses started early as well. As the years progressed, she became increasingly involved with cat and dog rescue in addition to working in the horse industry. Era saw the many sides, including the not-so-pretty ones, of the horse world. It made her know she loved horses, but not the pressure on them to perform.
Ever since, Era has shared her love for horses with many people in a non-competitive, holistic way. MMFS extends that love to other neglected and abandoned farm animals that would otherwise have no home.
Merrymac Farm Sanctuary became a formalized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the Spring of 2023. We have grown from a handful of folks to a village of incredible volunteers, visitors, and donors! It takes a village to do what we do, and we couldn't survive without it!

FAQs
-
Sanctuaries provide permanent homes for animals. Their primary goal is to provide a safe, long-term environment where animals can live out their lives in peace and dignity. Sanctuaries focus on animal welfare and aim to offer a compassionate alternative to euthanasia or continued suffering in unfavorable conditions. In addition to daily animal care, sanctuaries engage in education and advocacy to promote animal welfare and raise awareness about the plight of animals in captivity or unsafe environments.
-
Sanctuaries, shelters, and animal rehabilitation centers all play vital roles in addressing animal welfare. Sanctuaries provide lifetime care for animals in need, shelters aim to find homes for adoptable pets, and rehabilitation centers focus on caring for wildlife or exotic animals with the goal of eventually releasing them back into the wild.

Yes! Merrymac Farm Sanctuary has applied for accreditation from the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS)—the gold standard for animal sanctuary certification. With only 215 GFAS-accredited sanctuaries worldwide, earning this distinction is a rigorous and meaningful achievement. The process requires extensive documentation and implementation of best practices in animal care, governance, and operational policies. Even at this stage, working toward accreditation has strengthened our sanctuary in many ways. As part of our application, GFAS will conduct an on-site evaluation in early June. We are excited for this next step and look forward to sharing updates with our community.

I am a senior studying Animal Science at University of Vermont! I am exploring the different fields of Veterinary Medicine with the hope to attend Veterinary School in the near future. Merrymac is such a great outlet for hands on farm animal experience and research opportunities!
